Oral surgery is a key branch of dentistry, focused on treating dental and oral conditions through surgical intervention.
The most common procedures are: tooth extraction, apicoectomy, surgical treatment of periodontal disease, surgery for prosthetic or orthodontic purposes, and aesthetic corrections (gingivectomy and gingivoplasty).
Tooth extraction is the most frequent dental procedure, typically of low to medium complexity. The tooth is removed from its alveolus when restoration procedures have failed, when it is severely affected by infection, or when it has an extensive fracture.
Apicoectomy is a microsurgical procedure that removes the apex (tip of the root) together with the surrounding infection.
Gingivectomy is performed for therapeutic and aesthetic reasons, removing excess gum tissue with a laser or surgically. Gingivoplasty reshapes the gum around the tooth and follows gingivectomy.
